Arthur E. Levine, President of the Teachers College of Columbia University suggested that ¡°several major forces today have the power to transform the nation¡¯s colleges and universities.¡± Levine (2000) further identified ¡°shifting demographics, new technologies, the entrance of commercial organizations into higher education, the changing relationships between colleges and the federal and state governments, and the move from an industrial to an information society¡± as these forces. Information technology (IT) is more than just one of those forces; it has enabled or influenced all the others.

The purposes of this article are to report briefly on IT in U.S. higher education and the process of IT integration in American higher education; to describe IT in Thai higher education, its future direction and means of achieving its goals; and to consider the potential impact of IT exportation on Thai higher education.
